Embarrassed By The Bahamian Mindset

As a Bahamian who has lived abroad for almost a decade and a half, I am truly saddened and embarrassed at the state of our Bahamas and the mindset of our people.

Watching this country fall apart due to the actions and attitudes of our politicians makes me angry. Everything is politicised and we the people end up on the short end of the stick. We hire, not based on qualifications, but the party you support.

Here in Abaco a government employee was fired with almost a full five years left on his contract, which the government is indebted to pay, and hired someone in his place, what a waste of taxpayer’s money. Our leaders have succeeded in giving us botched up jobs and misinformation always in an effort to further their political agenda.

Our politicians are supposed to be the “cream of the crop,” educated men and women of good moral standing in the community. Yet when you hear them speak and the verbage they use towards one another, one can only wonder. They are never able to say anything good about the opposing members, added to that, it is delivered in a spirit of anger and vindictiveness. If this is what the head is doing how do they expect the rest of the country to behave?

They talk about teaching conflict resolution to the community through the urban renewal programme. I suggest all of the Members of Parliament take a refresher course in conflict resolution and anger management. Case in point the way the “honourable members spoke about the former Prime Minister of our great country on his departure from the House, including Mr McCartney who was salivating at the mouth to get his two cents in. He could have used that opportunity to show that he had risen above petty and selfish ambitions, highlighted the accomplishments of the former Prime Minister and moved on. That’s a man who is worthy of my respect.

After they do all this they ask the country to work together when out of the other side of their mouth they are tearing each other apart. The Rt Honourable Mr Perry Gladstone Christie should remember he describes himself as a born again Christian and should model that in all his endeavours, further to this, his retirement planned or unplanned is not too far in the future.
