More Legal Shenanigans in ‘Die’ Stubbs Case

Stephen ‘Die’ Stubbs

The trial of the three men accused of a police constable’s murder more than a decade ago was delayed in the Supreme Court yesterday after prosecutors and the lawyers for the defendants expressed several concerns.

Stephen ‘Die’ Stubbs, Clint ‘Russ’ Evans and Andrew ‘Yogi’ Davis are on trial for the 1999 murder of Corporal Jimmy Ambrose, who was shot and killed outside the now-closed Club Rock Disco on West Bay Street.

The three men were escorted to court yesterday under heavy police guard and the area surrounding the court was cordoned off.

Snipers were also on the roofs of the buildings surrounding the main Supreme Court building. Scores of senior police officers also stood outside the court.

Davis was absent from court yesterday because of medical issues. It is unclear when he will be able to come to court.

Jurors were selected shortly after 11 a.m., but they were soon excused to allow the attorneys to air their concerns. Matters discussed during that time can not be disclosed because of the absence of the jury.

The case was adjourned shortly before 1 p.m.

This is the third time the men will be tried in connection with Ambrose’s murder.

The appellate court overturned the men’s conviction and ordered a retrial. The second trial which took place in 2004 ended in a mistrial.

Supreme Court Justice Roy Jones is presiding over the case.

Attorney Murrio Ducille represents Stubbs, Romona Farquharson represents Evans and Ian Cargill represents Davis.

Director of Public Prosecutions Vinette Graham-Allen and attorney Neil Braithwaite represent the crown.

The case will continue today at 10 a.m.

Stubbs is currently serving a four-year sentence for conspiracy to import marijuana and conspiracy to possess marijuana with intent to supply.

He was convicted in a magistrates court in August.
