10 Illegal Brazilian Immigants Discovered

Police in Grand Bahama arrested 12 people, including 10 Brazilian nationals, on Monday and are working with Immigration officials to determine how the illegal immigrants came to be here.

Officers from the Marine Division on sea patrol in the Bell Channel area around 6:10 p.m. reportedly observed a yellow 20-foot Cobira vessel with two 200 horse power Yamaha outboard engines and two males on boar.

The males, a Bahamian and American, were reportedly acting suspiciously and the officers stopped the vessel.

It was discovered that the vessel was not cleared by Customs or Immigration, police say.

A further check of a second vessel, which took police to a hotel in the Victoria Avenue and Midshipman Road area, led to the discovery of the 10 Brazilian nationals.

Police arrested every one and handed the Brazilians over to Bahamas Immigration.

The matter is said to be under active investigation.
