Propane gas retailers have until a minute after noon today to offer service to the entire public or they will be shut down indefinitely, according to Leslie Miller, Minister of Trade and Industry.
“They are breaking the law,” said Mr. Miller. “It is unfair, especially to the mothers of this country who are trying to prepare Christmas dinners, for them (the retailers) to say ‘we are only selling to paradise island or Kentucky Fried Chicken or a restaurant out west’.”
“Consumers should never be held hostage like this, and it is a mandate of the government to protect the Bahamian public.”
Mr. Miller also announced Wednesday that the retailers will be able to sell the 100 pound tanks of gas to consumers for $65 per container. This means that retailers will benefit from a mark-up of about $20.
Mr. Miller said he is disgusted with the fact that they would prey upon the public’s necessity to cook large meals during the Christmas season to benefit their own means.
