US Movie Distributors Seek Evidence Against Bahamas

Legal representatives of the major US film distributors are set to visit Nassau in mid-March to gather evidence on “blatant” copyright infringements that will be used to encourage the US government to further pressurise the Bahamas on safeguarding intellectual property rights, The Tribune was told yesterday.

Chris Mortimor, manager of Galleria Cinemas, said he “agreed wholeheartedly” with the International Intellectual Property Alliance’s (IIPA) assessment that the Bahamas did little to enforce its copyright legislation, estimating that pirated DVDs sold by street vendors and other businesses cost his company 25-30 per cent of annual revenues.

The IIPA, in its submission to the US Trade Representative last week, said “serious concerns” remained on the Bahamas copyright legislation and enforcement of those regulations.
