Minister of State for Finance Michael Halkitis will address the Rotary Club of Nassau Sunrise March 14 on features of the government’s website and benefits of conducting business transactions on the online portal at bahamas.gov.bs.
The minister’s presentation is expected to unveil more of the site than many users experience and reveal the newest addition, the ability for the public to offer opinions on the proposed Constitutional reform. The website, launched 18 months ago, has attracted consistent traffic, often taking first place among all local websites for viewers with hundreds of thousands of hits, plus spikes during periods of intense interest including hurricane warnings, elections and major news events. Now, the Department of Information Technology wants to increase the number of registered users who go online to renew a driver’s license, pay a court fine, pay Real Property Tax, request a police certificate or conduct other routine business. There are just over 4,600 registered users.
“Bahamas.gov.bs is a valuable resource for residents and visitors alike,” said Minster Michael Halkitis. “In addition to sourcing information on government ministries and departments, Bahamian law, current news and providing a plethora of downloadable forms, the website also features a convenient portal allowing users to conduct certain business activities right from a desk or laptop, saving time and in the long run, money.”
“We are working to increase the public’s knowledge of the site’s offerings,” said Carol Roach, Deputy Director of Information Technology. “In coming months, there will be a number of events, forums and registration drives geared towards increasing the site’s user base.”
