A Bahamian contingent led by the Very Reverend Patrick Adderley, Chairman of the Anglican Central Education Authority, left for Wales on Friday to attend the funeral service of the Reverend Canon David John Pugh, former rector of St Anne’s Anglican Church, Fox Hill and founder of St Anne’s Anglican School, who died on Sunday, January 30, in Wales, following a prolonged illness.
Canon Pugh first came to the Bahamas as a member of the Royal Air Force Detachment during the 1940’s, and returned as a Deacon in 1953. On May 24, 1954, he was ordained a priest, and appointed as priest-in-charge of the parish of St Anne, Fox Hill.
In an effort to ensure that the children of the parish had access to secondary education, Canon Pugh held classes in the church’s garage. He started with six students.
This humble effort was the forerunner of St Anne’s High School, which opened its doors on January 6, 1955 with 26 students.
This year marks the 50th anniversary of St Anne’s High School.
As the school celebrates this significant milestone, it continues to boast of its rich legacy. It is ranked among the leading secondary institutions in the Bahamas with its graduates holding leading positions in all sectors of the community.
