Haitian Community Fears Over Minister's Comments

The Haitian community is near a state of “total panic”, fearing that the current tense relations with Bahamians is increasing the possibility of large scale conflict, human rights activist and lawyer Elizier Regnier told The Tribune yesterday.

Mr. Regnier was responding to what he called “anti-Haitian” remarks made by Trade and Industry Minister Leslie Miller in the House of Assembly this week. Mr. Regnier believes that Mr. Miller’s comments echo the sentiments of many Bahamians.

The lawyer claimed that activities like the immigration department’s aggressive roundups of suspected illegal immigrants are creating a tense “pregenocidal state”.

The comments of the Minister feed the mistrust of Bahamian officials, who seem to be increasingly anti-Haitian in their attitudes, he claimed.
