Boys Arrested After Girl Slashed On School Campus

Two boys who are students at the Jack Hayward High School are expected to soon appear before the juvenile panel in Freeport in connection with an altercation on that school campus police said ended with a 14-year-old girl being slashed with a six-inch knife.

Itᄡs the latest report of violence at the Freeport government school involving students. The last incident, which occurred several months ago, resulted in students having to seek minor medical observation.

It is also a matter that points to what police said is the prevalent occurrence of students traveling to school armed with various types of weapons.

Police said the girl in Wednesday afternoonᄡs incident was left with a serious laceration to her left arm, and was taken to the Rand Memorial Hospital where she was treated and later released.

The altercation reportedly occurred at around 12:20pm.

According to authorities, an altercation erupted on campus between the three students and during the fight a 16-year-old male student of Lafayette Gardens took out the knife and slashed the girl.

Police and emergency personnel were dispatched to the scene and police said the two males were later arrested and taken into custody.

During the Royal Bahamas Police Forceᄡs anniversary exhibitions held here in Freeport a cache of daggers, butcher knives and makeshift weapons were all on display. Police said they had been seized from students on school campuses throughout the island.

Gesturing to the weapons on display, Corporal Craig Wallace, 2nd coordinator of the Urban Renewal project in Lucaya, told the Bahama Journal, “This imitation machine gun and the imitation 9mm handgun were taken out of a welding class from a young student.”

Corporal Wallace said the weapons have been used in both the commission and attempted commission of crimes on the island.
