Tourist Drowns At Freeport Resort

Police said a vacation to Grand Bahama turned tragic for a Texas couple as the man drowned in the pool of a Freeport resort Wednesday night.

Dead is John Irvin Thomas, 38, of Long View, Texas.

Authorities said the islandᄡs police dispatch centre received a call from an anonymous female at around 11:21pm who said a man was lying on the bottom of the swimming pool at the Island Palm Resort on East Mall Drive and Explorers Way.

Police and emergency response personnel were dispatched to the scene where they reportedly found Mr. Thomas in the pool clad in causal clothing and not swimwear.

Authorities said he was pulled from the pool and EMS personnel tried unsuccessfully to revive him.

Paramedics then rushed the American visitor to the Rand Memorial Hospital where police said he was pronounced dead by a physician at 12:16am.

According to authorities, Mr. Thomas was officially identified by his wife who said she had been relaxing at poolside earlier that evening with her husband before she decided to leave for bed.

Police said she indicated that her husband was 90 percent blind.

Investigators did not suspect foul play, but said they do suspect that the consumption of alcohol might have played a role in the drowning.

An autopsy will be performed to determine the manᄡs exact cause of death, authorities said.
