Copper Teifin’ Still Big Business

The City of Freeport Council has become the latest victim of copper wire theft after bandits made away with lengths of wire from the Independence Park.

Freeport City Councillor for High Rock Fritz Thompson said that someone went and cut the supply lines that run underground carrying approximately 600 feet of copper wire.

The electric box had been broken open and a pipe encasing the wires was broken so the thieves could access the bunch of wire and rip it out of the ground.

One week ago, two Grand Bahama businesses were also hit by copper thieves and police were said to be investigating those matters.

According to official reports, sometime between the close of business on Thursday, September 16 and the morning of Friday, September 17, thieves stole copper wire with an estimated value of $500 from an air-conditioning unit located on the outside of the Kelly’s True Value building.

When employees arrived at the store and turned on the air-conditioning system on Friday morning they realized that it was not functioning properly and went outside to conduct a physical inspection of the unit. It was then that they discovered that the cooper wire from the unit was gone.

Criminals also made away with the entire air-conditioning unit from the Caribbean Electric store, which is located in the same area as Kelly’s, that same night.
