Undersized Crawfish Found on Mail Boat

More than 60 pounds of undersized crawfish was seized on Friday on the mail-boat coming into Grand Bahama from Grand Cay.

According Superintendent of Fisheries, Clement Campbell, he received a tip early Friday morning and he, along with police proceed to the dock where the mailboat was expected to come in.

Once there, Campbell said that an inspection was made and the illegal catch was found in coolers and duffel bags.

“No one was brought in for the matter because the person/s from Grand Cay had sent it for someone on the mainland and there was no one to claim it.” Campbell explained.

“The goods were confiscated by police, but we want to thank the public for assisting us and calling in with tips.”

He added that there also seem to be a trend growing as persons are attempting to smuggle illegal catch in suitcases and boxes when they travel.

“People are trying to see how best they can work their way around the law, but if we do not enforce the law now, it will have far reaching affects on one of our greatest resources which is our marine life.”

Campbell said there was also 23 pounds of precooked crawfish in the seizure that was made.
