Caribbean Children’s Art Contest Reveals Budding Talent

Kassie-Ann Kalloo and Shaquille Simon are the winners of the 2010 RBC/RBTT Caribbean Children’s Cancer Fund Art Competition in Trinidad. The two were among six students to receive prizes at RBC’s Head Office in St Clair on November 12. Over 200 submissions were received regionally from Aruba, Curacao, Jamaica and T&T. Winners were selected in a seven to 12- year-old category, and a 13 to 16-year-old category from each country. The winning submissions are being used to develop a pack of assorted Christmas cards, to be sold to raise funds for children 16 years and under diagnosed with cancer. Proceeds from the sale of the Christmas cards will be donated to the RBC/RBTT Caribbean Children’s Cancer Fund.

The judges were impressed by the artistic work of the talented duo. “Kassie-Ann’s piece was conceptually strong and the various elements of the piece supported that. It was humorous and detailed, the vibrant colours drew the viewer in, and she demonstrated superb use of mixed media. “Shaquille’s piece was highly technical, showed superb craftsmanship and understanding of surface… skilful incorporation of the national colours. This was the work of a serious art student, he has a promising future ahead,” they concurred.
