Construction To Start on New Grand Bahama Bridge

Grand Bahama Port Authority (GBPA) Honorary Chairman Sir Jack Hayward announced that construction of a multi-million bridge over the Lucayan waterway will begin soon.

Two local construction companies, Waugh Construction and Albacore Construction, will be working on the $4 million project to replace the 40 year-old Casuarina bridge.

In a press conference last Friday, Sir Jack said that Grand Bahamians living on the eastern end of the island would benefit from the new bridge.

He expressed his concerns over the current bridge.

“We’ve always worried about the Casuarina Bridge. It’s the only contact over the waterway and should the Casuarina Bridge collapse, we would have two islands – East and West Grand Bahama; and the poor blighters living on the east side, unless they can swim, will be cut off from the centre shops, the harbour, airport, medical facilities, their place of work … they will be isolated,” Mr Hayward said.

“It always worries me because although we put a 30 ton limit on the bridge we know that that has been exceeded by sometimes 50 tons.”

“I apologise for the delays, they haven’t been caused by me, they’ve been a question of discussing it all between the partners of DEVCO (Grand Bahama Development Company) and LUSCO (Lucaya Services Company), but I’m happy to say that it’s going to go ahead,” Sir Jack added.
