One Weekend: Four Murders In Nassau

Police are investigating at least four murders that occurred over the weekend, raising the murder count for 2011 to seven.

The first body was discovered by police on Friday night after police officers shot and killed a man outside the O.K. Bar on East Street.

Police reports reveal that Friday night, around 11:30pm, plain clothes police officers were patrolling the area of East and Hay Streets in a police cruiser when they heard gunshots and noticed a crowd fleeing the area of the O.K. Bar.

A man wearing a camouflage jacket came running out of the bar, shooting at another man wearing a red hooded jacket.

The officers allegedly exited their cruiser and identified themselves to the man with the handgun, telling him to drop his weapon.

“On hearing this, it is reported that the culprit pointed his weapon in the direction of the officers which resulted in the officers returning fire from their police service weapons, hitting the suspect to the chest area,” the police report said.

Upon investigating the circumstances of the shooting, police found the body of another man inside the O.K. Bar. He had been shot in the chin area.

On Saturday morning, police were called to a location on Faith United Way after the partially nude body of a young woman was discovered near a dumpster. This was the second woman to suffer such a fate in the last week.

The body of 26-year-old Inderia Barry was discovered near a dumpster on property at Faith United Way, off Baillou Hill Road South. The young woman was found wearing only a grey-hooded sweater and a white T-shirt. It is believed that she had been raped and shot in the head before her body was dumped at the site.

A third murder occurred shortly before 5:00pm Saturday when a man was shot outside a residence on Willow Tree Street in Pinewood Gardens. Police believe that the man, who was not identified, was exiting his vehicle when he was shot.

The victim was rushed to the hospital by emergency medical personnel but died shortly after.

A fourth murder was also reported yesterday in the area of Gilbert Street, Kennedy Subdivision, shortly before 7:00pm, where a man had been shot and killed. Police do not know whether it was connected to the shooting in Pinewood Gardens.

Police have their hands full as they continue their investigations in these matters.
