Cultural Icon, Jackson Burnside, Dies

Jackson Burnside

Jackson Burnside, renowned artist, architect, cultural icon and beloved community member, passed away on Wednesday, May 11 at 10:50am at the age of 62.

His wife Pamela and daughters Ebony and Orchid were with him when he died.

After suffering a brain aneurysm Mr. Burnside was airlifted to a Florida hospital where he later had a stroke and slipped into coma for more than four weeks.

He ran an architect firm, Jackson Burnside Ltd, and was the founder of Doongalik Art Studios. During his illustrious career he had received many awards and honours, including the Bahamas Chamber of Commerce Distinguished Citizens Award for the Creative and Performing Arts, and the 2008 Bahamas Home and Builders Lifetime Achievement Award.

He enjoyed being involved in and contributing to the cultural community. He was a Chairman Emterious and designer of the ‘One Family’ Junkanoo and Community Organisation Group.
