Massachusetts researchers have discovered new information about the bonefish’s spawning habits they say can help protect the popular tropical sportfish.
The University of Massachusetts at Amherst says scientists tagged 60 bonefish with ultrasonic transmitters and tracked them in the Bahamas between 2007 and 2009.
They say the scientists found that twice monthly between October and May, bonefish gather in schools of more than 1,000, then move to deeper offshore waters at dusk to spawn under cover of darkness
