Statement On Prison Vehicles Accident

At approximately 9:40am on May 5, 2011, an accident involving Prison and Police Escort Vehicles occurred on Bernard Road.  The vehicles were enroute to Court and reportedly traveling about thirty (30) miles per hour.

There were sixty-seven (67) inmates and fourteen (14) Officers onboard the vehicles during the collision.  One (1) Prison Officer and two (2) Prison inmates were injured and taken to the Princess Margaret Hospital for treatment.

According to initial reports, none of the injuries are considered serious.  At no time during the above-mentioned incident were security arrangements compromised.

The Ministry wishes to advise the public that a full investigation is underway into this incident and a further review of the transportation arrangements of inmates to and from the Prison is taking place.

The Ministry again emphasizes the need for the general public to obey the sirens of security vehicles and ambulances and for motorists to pull to the side of the road to allow these vehicles free access to their destinations.
