Donald d’Albenas Passes Away

Donald Edmond d’Albenas, aged 95, passed away on July 7, 2011 at Sunrise Senior Living of Erin Mills in Mississauga.

He had been a true entrepreneur and was instrumental in starting several major food related companies in the Bahamas. He had also served as a Member of Parliament in the Bahamas for 17 years, Cabinet Minister (1964 – 1967) and held numerous public posts.

He was the last remaining juror of the Sir Harry Oakes trial. A truly remarkable man, he had remained a devout Christian all his life, he was a leader in various kinds of church work for over 30 years.

Mr d’Albenas made time to do all this and much more yet still spent quality time with his family. He married the former Dorothea Malone of Nassau in 1941 and they spent over 50 wonderful years together.

They produced one daughter, Saranne, and three sons, Larry, Robert and Tim.

In 1973 the couple moved to Montreal, spending the summers in Canada and the winters in Florida until Dorothea’s death in 1995.

Later he got remarried – to the former Vi Barrow, who had previously lived in Nassau for many years and knew the family well.

He was a kind and generous man, who led his life with dignity and showed respect for others. HeĀ  made this world a better place and he was greatly loved and respected by all who knew him.
