Caribbean Fisheries Face Challenges

fishingDuring a recent Caribbean Fisheries Forum, held in Nassau, Bahamas, concerns have been raised over the numerous challenges which faced by Caribbean countries regarding the sustainable development of fisheries and aquaculture sector. Some key issues discussed dealt with the prevalence of illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing, the need to improve sanitary and phyto-sanitary standards to ensure safety, and the improvement of the access to export markets, among others.

On a positive note, the meeting saw the expression of appreciation for donors which are contributing to the sustainable development of fisheries in the region, through the funding of a number of important regional fisheries projects, among which are the Spanish Government and the EU-funded ACP Fish II Project.
