School Security Officers Urged To Be Vigilant

Nassau, Bahamas – Over one hundred Ministry of Education security officers were advised to always exercise vigilance during a general meeting held on Tuesday, April 10. Director of Education, Mr. Lionel Sands delivered remarks at the event, commending Acting Director Smith and his team for their hard work.

“I wish to commend Acting Director Smith and his team for doing such a fine job of protecting our students and all other personnel on our various premises,” said Mr. Sands.

Mr. Sands said that ‘security is a serious matter’ and the need to feel safe in a place where people spend most of their day is an essential element in achieving productivity.’

“Security Officers play a major role in the preservation of lives and property in our school system,” said Mr. Sands. “You, ladies and gentlemen, act as guardians against law breakers or violent criminals that may seek to penetrate our compounds and cause harm.”

He said the Ministry and Department of Education understand that as front-line security officers, they face danger on a daily basis. “This is why high quality training and the implementation of good techniques is so important in your field of work.”

He pointed out that security officers must be very knowledgeable of law enforcement, especially those parts that are school related. He added that they also must be observant and vigilant in order to prevent incidents or altercations before they occur.

“You must know how to approach and engage persons in a way that ensures calmness and good results. You must keep accurate records and be accountable at the time of reporting. All of these elements will guarantee success when carrying out your duties.”

Also in attendance were Superintendent Robert Sherman Young, Officer-in-Charge of Elizabeth Estates Police Station, who discussed surveillance and policing techniques. Anglican Priest, Reverend Whitfield Hutcheson, spoke on the topic “Work Ethics.”
