Life at the Bahamas Humane Society continues to be busy with our thriving clinic, school visits, surrey horse inspections, dog and cat surrenders and adoptions.
In April, a total of 97 dogs and puppies were surrendered to the Shelter, and 37 were adopted out. 77 cats and kittens were surrendered with 25 being adopted out.
As I’m sure you can guess from those numbers, we still have a full house, so if you’re looking to adopt or know someone who is, please drop by and complete an adoption form. Forms can also be found online: www.bahamashumanesociety.com/how-to-adopt/
Upcoming next week is the monthly Operation Potcake meeting. This will be held Thursday, May 17th at 6 p.m. at the BHS Shelter. This campaign involves all the local animal groups, the vets, and the government, with the goal being to spay and neuter 2,000 animals in ten days in January 2013. On Saturday, June 9th, New Providence Community Church will be holding a Summer Celebration at their property on Blake Road from noon to 6 p.m. The BHS will have a table there and possibly some puppies as well. Please come out and visit us. If you have a couple of hours to volunteer that day, I’d love some company! Information for the event can also be found in the flyer.
BHS Summer Camp registration has begun! The Summer Camp is a great way for children ages 6 to 12 to have some hands-on time with puppies and kittens, walk some dogs, and learn about animals in general. Camp begins June 25th and runs for six weeks.
You can sign up for a week at a time or for many weeks. Registration is $125.00 per week and includes a t-shirt. Space is limited so please register early. Camp runs from 9 a.m. to noon each day. Campers are asked to bring a snack and drink for themselves, and, if possible, a leash and towel for walking and bathing. Treats for the animals (vegetables and fruits for the donkeys, goat and ponies, biscuits for the dogs) are always welcome.
Did you know? Cats have 32 muscles that control the outer ear (compared to a human’s 6 muscles each). A cat can rotate its ears independently 180 degrees and can turn in the direction of sound 10 times faster than those of the best watchdog.
