Haitians Detained After Storm Grounds Boat

Haitian migrants

Officials in the Bahamas say more than 100 Haitian migrants have been detained after a smuggler’s sloop ran aground during Tropical Storm Isaac’s trek across the region.

The islands’ National Emergency Management Agency said that the boat ran aground Saturday just off Andros Island as Isaac churned south-west of the Bahamas.

Immigration Director Jack Thompson said Sunday that 122 Haitians have been detained but the exact number of people on board has not been established. Authorities plan to search for possible bodies in the area, but the seas have been too rough.

Many Haitians have migrated to the Bahamas in recent years to work low-wage jobs or to try to get to the US.

In June, eleven Haitians died when their boat capsized off the Bahamian island of Abaco.
