US Embassy Invests In Environmental Awareness

Nikita Shiel-Rolle and John Dinkelman

NASSAU, Bahamas — U.S. Charge d’Affaires John Dinkelman met with Ms. Nikita Shiel-Rolle, the founder of the Bahamian NGO the Young Marine Explorers (YME), on Tuesday September 4 to discuss her participation in a U.S. Department of State International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP) from June 11 to 29, 2012 which focused on environmental and conservation education.

The three-week professional exchange took Ms. Shiel-Rolle to Washington D.C., San Francisco, California, Pensacola, Florida and San Juan, Puerto Rico where she visited U.S. research facilities and academic institutions that focus on environmental protection and sustainability issues.  She also met with American community-based and NGO leaders that are working to encourage young people to be stewards of the environment on behalf of future generations.

During their meeting U.S. Chargé d’Affaires Dinkelman applauded Ms. Shiel-Rolle for her efforts to expand Bahamian students’ interest in marine science and conservation issues through YME’s afterschool programs in public schools on New Providence and through experiential based activities on the Family Islands each summer. The Chargé also reiterated the U.S. Embassy’s commitment to supporting local organizations that promote environmental awareness, particularly among youth.
