Over 200 Arrested In Fraudulent Licensing Scam

Police report that they have arrest more than 200 people in connection with a fraudulent automobile licensing scam that has helped contribute to the Bahamas’ “alarming” level of stolen vehicles.

Police Superintendent Paul Rolle spoke at CDU where he and several other officers issued warnings to the public regarding the scam and offered tips on how to avoid having a vehicle stolen.

Police also said that the number of car thefts has decreased compared to last year. The current number of cars stolen is 136, and, of that number, 88 are Hondas and 47 are Nissans.

However, Asst. Superintendent Edward Demeritte noted that even though there has been a decrease in auto theft, the police are still “very concerned by the alarming number”.

Superintendent Rolle explained that cars being purchased from an individual, rather than a dealership, increases the risk of buying a fraudulently licensed or possible stolen car.

“You recall that some time ago,” he told The Tribune, “we talked about an investigation that we had uncovered where persons were fraudulently licensing these vehicles and I can say to you today, that to date we have charged in excess of 200 individuals within this scam that we have uncovered.”

Police confirmed that they expect to arrest more people in connection with the scam.
