Crime: The Bahamas Is Falling Apart

Every day we are greeted with news of new violence in our communities. Last Friday three individuals were murdered. Immediately following that carnage drugs and weapons were discovered in a building next to an Urban Renewal 2.0 Office. Armed robberies and home invasions are no longer startling news. Recently a fatal police shooting did not even make the front page of the newspaper – instead it was pushed to page 7. Senior citizens are subjected to robberies on the road and in their homes on a daily basis. Many citizens have despaired and no longer even report street robberies to the police.

The Government’s reaction to this has been paralysis. In an effort to fool the Bahamian people that the crime they are facing on a daily basis is not real, the Government instructed the police to adjust its methodology on recording and reporting crime. As a result nobody believes what anyone in the law enforcement community says about crime; it’s all a PR campaign by the compromised PLP Government.

And still Minister Responsible for National Security, Dr. B.J. Nottage would have us believe that violent crime is down. The Minister is delusional. The public know that crime is out of control. The public is also beginning to believe that the PLP so compromised themselves during the last general election campaign that they are now unable to confront the crime situation with any moral authority. This is terrible news for The Bahamas.
