On September 12, U.S. Chargé d’Affaires John Dinkelman hosted a reception to welcome the new Director of the Embassy’s International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL) Section, Ms. Kristin Gilmore.
INL administers bilateral counternarcotics and law enforcement assistance programs with The Bahamas and the Turks and Caicos Islands.
The office serves as a resource on counternarcotics, anti-money laundering, international crime, and rule of law issues. It is also the coordinating office for the Caribbean Basin Security Initiative (CBSI).
The event, held at the National Art Gallery of The Bahamas (NAGB) was in collaboration with the opening of an exhibit displaying the work of 20 National Geographic Photography Camp participants, the result of a joint project between The Bahamas National Drug Council (BNDC) and the INL Section.
Among the invited guests at the reception, the Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture, Dr. Daniel Johnson, the Minister of Health, Dr. Perry Gomez, Dr. Bridgette Rolle, BNDC Director and other U.S. and Bahamian officials.
The invited guests were given a tour of the traveling exhibition which features the photography of twenty talented Bahamian youth from New Providence, Grand Bahama, and Crooked Island, winners of the first “Youth Expression against Drug Competition,” cosponsored by the BNDC and the Embassy.
Last summer, the winners received scholarships to attend the National Geographic Photography Camp held at the Island School in Cape Eleuthera. They learned the basics of photography from world renowned National Geographic photographer Raul Touzon and photo editor Todd James and showcased the natural beauty of The Bahamas and its people.
The travelling photo exhibit will be on display at the National Art Gallery until the end of September before heading to Grand Bahama.
