Sir Durward Knowles, 96, will be honored later this year, along with his one-man crew in star class sailing from the 1964 Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan. It’s been 50 years since Sir Durward and the late Cecil Cooke sailed to the country’s first Olympic gold medal, and the most esteemed Bahamian remembers it as if it was just yesterday.

In another first for The Bahamas, Grand Isle Resort & Spa hosted a “Dinner of Champions” during the Olympics last month with decorated Olympians from two different countries.
Grand Isle Resort & Spa and The Bahamas shared an unusual world first last week when professional hockey players, decorated Olympians and hotel guests faced off in a road hockey game on the tiny island of Farmer’s Cay.
