Waste that, in the past, may have posed safety and health hazards will now be properly disposed of in the Bahamas after yesterday’s opening of the country’s first biomedical waste facility.
The million dollar operation, facilitated by Bahamas Waste Management on Gladstone Road, will dispose of waste from health care operators that usually contains disease causing germs, and until yesterday went untreated before being deposited in the local landfill.
This unhealthy method of waste disposal is unsafe for the environment, said manager of the facility Fred Donathan.
