Straw Vendors Free Lunch Is Over

The remarks made by straw vendors spokesperson, Esther Thompson, at yesterday’s new straw market roof wetting ceremony speak volumes as to what is now generally perceived as the attitude of far too many Bahamians when it comes to respect for authority and observance of the law.

Although the Minister responsible has made it clear that only Bahamians and Bahamian manufactured goods will be permitted in the new market, she and her followers have publicly thumbed their noses at the authorities and announced their intention to continue to sell illegal counterfeit goods.

Apart from reinforcing a growing local and international impression that we are a nation of beggars and thieves, have they learned nothing from their recent sojourn in New York?.

She is also bemoaning the fact that rent is now required, albeit minimal, something most business people are well acquainted with, while completely ignoring the fact that the taxpayers, who have little or nothing to gain from their “contribution” are really the ones bankrolling their enterprise.

Mrs. Thompson is correct in one regard, however, these are indeed tough times economically and everyone must pay their way as we, the taxpayers, are looking for a return on our investment.

Free lunch time is over.
