Two New Supreme Court Justices Appointed

NASSAU, Bahamas — Chief Justice Sir Michael Barnett is pleased to announce the appointment of Justice Roy Jones as a Justice of the Supreme Court and Mr. Milton A. Evans as an acting Justice of the Supreme Court. Both Justice Jones and Mr. Evans will be sworn in by the Governor General on Tuesday, 1st February, 2011.

Justice Jones served as a Justice of the High Court of Jamaica from April, 2002 to December, 2010. On 20th December, 2010, he was sworn in to act as a Justice of the Court of Appeal of Jamaica. Justice Jones also served as an acting Justice of the Grand Court of the Cayman Islands between January, 2010 and March, 2010.

Prior to his service as a Justice of the Supreme Court of Jamaica, Justice Jones served as a Stipendiary and Circuit Magistrate in The Bahamas from September, 1989 to October, 1993.

In describing Justice Jones, the Commissioner of Police of Jamaica said: “Justice Jones integrity is impeccable, he is a quiet individual, respectable, trustworthy and honest and who always displays sober habits that earns him the respect in and outside the judiciary.”

Justice Jones is married to the former Eslyn Hollingsworth of West End, Grand Bahama.

Mr. Milton Evans is presently a partner in the law firm of Evans & Co. Born in Nicholl’s Town, Andros, Mr. Evans received his education in Andros as well as in New Providence at the Government High School and the College of The Bahamas. He received his LLB degree with honours from the University of the West Indies in 1986 and was called to the Bahamas Bar in 1988.

Mr. Evans has practiced law both in private practice as well as in the Office of The Attorney General. Whilst in the Office of the Attorney General he served as Deputy Director of Legal Affairs. Mr. Evans is an experienced lawyer in both criminal as well as civil litigation.

Mr. Evans is presently a tutor in the law of evidence at the Eugene Dupuch Law School having previously served as a lecturer in the law of civil procedure at the law school. He serves as a member of the Rules Committee of the Supreme Court.

Mr. Evans is married to the former Patrice Ramsay of New Providence.

Chief Justice Barnett said that both Justice Jones and Mr. Evans bring wide experience to the Supreme Court. Justice Jones will be assigned to the Criminal Division of the Supreme Court and Acting Justice Evans, who will serve for three months, will be assigned to the Civil Division.
