Clash At Carifta Over Bahamas Disqualification In Boys Relay

CATHERINE HALL, St James — The hotly-disputed disqualification of the Bahamas’ Boys Under-20 4×400 metres relay team on Monday’s final day of the 40th LIME CARIFTA Games at the Montego Bay Sports Complex was finally upheld long after most of the spectators, athletes and journalists left the venue.

Everyone was kept waiting for more than an hour after the final track event was run as the Bahamian officials protested the ruling, as one runner was ruled to have run in another lane — a violation of IAAF rule 170.8.

The decision was strenuously disputed by the Bahamians, holding up the final rites of the meet, including the announcement of the Austin Sealy Award to Antonique Strachan, who won the Girls Under-20 sprint double in 11.38 seconds and 23.17 seconds after equalling the 200m record (22.93) in Sunday’s semi-finals.
