Music Education Program To Assist Young Bahamians

A music education programme which has helped children from poor socio-economic backgrounds in Venezuela for over three decades is coming to the Bahamas to assist youngsters in one of New Providence’s more troubled communities.

El Sistema – originally called Social Action for Music – has organised over 125 youth orchestras, 30 symphony orchestras and has helped over 250,000 children, mostly from poor neighborhoods, learn to play a musical instrument.

The Bahamas Music Conservatory, in coordination with the government, is bringing four tutors from the ‘El Sistema’ programme in Venezuela to the Bahamas to launch ‘El Sistema Bahamas’.

‘El Sistema Bahamas’ will initially focus on the young people of Nassau Village.

The programme is known for rescuing children from impoverished circumstances and from environments of crime and drugs.
