TV Not Priority For Inaugural Battle 4 Atlantis

PARADISE ISLAND, BAHAMAS — When UConn played in the Maui Invitational a year ago, local fans simply had to tune their televisions to ESPN to watch the Huskies.

This year, things aren’t quite as easy.

The Battle 4 Atlantis is broadcast on two networks, Versus and HDNet. The latter was recently added for some Comcast subscribers in Connecticut, but is not in the lineup for viewers with Cablevision.

Thursday’s win over UNC Asheville was broadcast on HDNet, and today’s semifinal against UCF will be on Versus, which is available to Cablevision and Comcast subscribers.

Because the Battle 4 Atlantis is in its first year of existence, televising the tournament on a major network wasn’t the biggest focus for Kerzner International, the company that spearheaded the Battle 4 Atlantis.

“I’ll tell you right now — our first priority was not TV,” said Kerzner International president and managing director George Markantonis. “We wanted a great preseason college basketball tournament because we are a perfect location.”
