State Funeral For Sir Clifford Darling

The Cabinet Office wishes to advise the public that a State Funeral will be held for the late Sir Clifford Darling, former Governor-General of the Commonwealth of The Bahamas, Cabinet Minister, Parliamentarian and Trade Union Leader on Thursday, January 5, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. at Zion Baptist Church, East and Shirley Streets.  Interment follows in the Western Cemetery.

Sir Clifford died on December 27.  He was 89 years old.  He is survived by his wife, Lady Igrid Darling, his children and other relatives.

His body will lie in State in the foyer of the House of Assembly at 2:30 p.m. from today, i.e. Tuesday, January 3 for public viewing until sunset on Wednesday, January 4.  At 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, the Bearers’ Party will take the body in procession from Parliament Square, East on Bay Street to Elizabeth Avenue to Shirley Street and West on Shirley Street into Zion Baptist Church, located on the corner of East and Shirley Streets.

When the service is completed, Sir Clifford’s body will be taken in procession and proceed west on Shirley Street to Prince’s Street, west on Prince’s Street to Duke Street and west on Duke Street to Cumberland Street and north on Cumberland to Malborough Street.  The coterie will continue along, West on Malborough Street to west Bay Street and west along West Bay Street to Nassau Street travelling in a southern direction into the Western Cemetery where his body will be interred.

The public is advised of road closure to vehicular traffic.  Further announcements regarding road closure will follow.

Further details regarding the state funeral will be released as information becomes available.
