Kidney Disease Increasing In The Bahamas

Kidney disease is becoming an increasing problem in The Bahamas and it is an illness that can be prevented with the right diet and exercise, according to Kylie Moore, nurse manager at The Kidney Centre.

“There is a misconception that I didn’t drink water and I developed a kidney problem. Most times 80 percent of people develop it from diabetes and hypertension that’s left uncontrolled,” she said.

Kidney Day is being celebrated globally today under the theme, “Transplantation,” and the entire month of March is recognized worldwide as Kidney Month.

“We are just trying to bring an awareness to people about taking care of themselves and taking care of their health, eating well, putting some exercise in, visiting their doctor on a regular basis and taking their medications, especially in this economy where people are stressed out and put health on the back burner,” Moore said.

She noted that while there are other factors that could lead to kidney disease, the illness does not have to progress to kidney failure.

“Once they control whatever disease that is causing the failure they can either halt it or really slow it down,” Moore said.
