Abaco Hit By Tornado

tiny tornadoDirector of NEMA, Captain Stephen Russell flew out early this morning to Abaco via a Royal Bahamas Defence Force aircraft to assess the damaged caused by what is being described as a tornado in Murphy Town yesterday.

Abaco Administrator Cephas Cooper advised NEMA that a severe weather system passed though that settlement around 3pm Thursday, May 24, 2012.

Reportedly, three families have been displaced; lost their homes during the passage of that system, which the Met Office had sent out warnings of caution.

On Thursday, May 24, the Met Department issued a severe thunderstorm warning for Bimini, Grand Bahama, Abaco and adjacent waters.

Some of these thunderstorms have the potential to be severe at times, causing strong gusty winds, dangerous lightning, heavy downpour and possible tornadic activity, the Met Department said Thursday.

NEMA will give an update on this activity during its Press Conference scheduled forĀ  today at 12 noon.
