Tourists Complain Of Harassment By Beach Vendors

Grand Lucayan Resort

Complaints of drug dealers using the beach at Port Lucaya and tourists being harassed by vendors in the area, prompted a crisis meeting to be held Wednesday afternoon at the Grand Lucayan Resort.

Police, the Grand Bahama Port Authority and hotel bosses called the meeting with vendors to detail a catalogue of complaints made against them.

Superintendent David Deveaux, officer in charge of Lucaya Police Station, who headed the meeting said that basically there are three concerns being brought to the police’s attention.

“The first of which is the sale of illegal drugs on the beach to tourists,” said Superintendent Deveaux.

“The second are complaints coming in to us by the tourists themselves of harassment and thirdly we had complaints by the vendors of hair braiders who are harassing tourists as well.”

Supt. Deveaux is of the view that vendors operating on the beach (watersports-operators, hair braiders, vendors and restaurateurs) should wear uniforms, clearly distinguishing them from illegal operators and offenders of the law.

The officer affirmed that anyone found engaged in the sale of illegal drugs, robs or harasses any visitor will be dealt with to the fullest extent of the law.
