Atlantis On Damage Control After Attempted Heist

George Markantonis

Kerzner International (Bahamas) President and Managing Director George Markantonis said it is “disappointing” when criminals target tourist hot spots, but would not speculate on any possible industry fallout stemming from a foiled robbery, which occurred at Atlantis Sunday afternoon.

Security officers caught three men who gassed employees in the cashier’s cage of the Atlantis casino and tried to rob it shortly after noon, police said.

The men gained access to the area through the ceiling, police said, but were quickly nabbed by security officers, who responded to reports of a commotion.

The men were not armed with guns, but did disperse a substance, believed to be mace, throughout the cashier’s cage, according to police.

As a result, 16 employees were taken to hospital for treatment, police said. Markantonis said guests did not witness the incident and that everyone on the property was safe.
