ONE BILLION RISING began as a call to action based on the staggering statistic that 1 in 3 women on the planet will be beaten or raped during her lifetime. With the world population at 7 billion, this adds up to more than ONE BILLION WOMEN AND GIRLS.
On February 14, 2013, V-Day’s 15th anniversary, The Bahamas will join activists, writers, thinkers, celebrities, and women and men across the world to express outrage, demand change, strike, dance, and RISE in defiance of the injustices women suffer, demanding an end at last to violence against women.
“When we started V-Day 14 years ago, we had the outrageous idea that we could end violence against women,” said Ensler. “Now, we are both stunned and thrilled to see that this global action is truly escalating and gaining force, with union workers, parliament members, celebrities, and women of all backgrounds coming forward to join the campaign. When we come together on February 14, 2013 to demand an end to violence against women and girls it will be a truly global voice that will rise up.”

BAHAMAS: We are rising in support of implementing a much needed Sexual Offences Court in our country. This would cut down on the long periods of time between when a charge is made an a trial begins. On December 7, 2012 members of the Crisis Centre met with the Prime Minister to present this concern and were given a positive indication that it can be accomplished.
We would like to ensure that the Bahamian public is aware and continue to lend support to this and other important issues that affect the country at large.
Bahamas Against Sexual Violence & Child Abuse (BASV&CA) is a community of concerned citizen that have committed to promoting the activities of institutions like the Crisis Center, while lobbying for stricter penalties to be implemented and enforced upon predators.
The Crisis Centre is a non-profit ideologically independent organization primarily pledged to respond to the needs of all vicitms of sexual, physical and psychological abuse. The Centre also advocates for legislative and societal protection of survivors and raises public consciousness through education and information.
Other participating groups and organizations include BAM, getMusic Productions and Julien Believe.
