US Embassy Issues Crime Warning

The U.S. government has issued a warning about the threat of armed robbery in the Turks and Caicos Islands, a sleepy British territory south of the Bahamas where violent crime is rare.

A statement from the U.S. Embassy in the Bahamas said the government has received increased reports of armed robberies of U.S. citizens in Providenciales, the most populated island in the chain.

It said there were two incidents in the tourist area of Grace Bay and one in a private home and warned people to remain cautious.

Turks and Caicos Gov. Ric Todd said Wednesday the island chain had a few serious incidents recently but has one of the lowest levels of crime in the Caribbean. They get 1 million visitors per year, mostly from cruise ships.
