The controversy over Bahamas Power and Light overtime payments has expanded into a much larger argument over BPL management, accountability and the government’s energy policy. Prime Minister Philip Davis devoted a national address Monday night to the energy situation, condemning what he called abuse of BPL’s overtime system while laying out plans to introduce LNG, reduce reliance on rental generation and continue restructuring the electricity sector.
The political and labor fallout has kept the story alive. The Bahamas Electrical Workers Union says employees are being made “whipping boys” for overtime that management approved; the FNM is blaming the government; and the managerial union has now ordered work-to-rule action following the suspension of an employee.
