Rave, Recover, Exercise, Repeat

Health and Fitness Highlights Sci/Tech

Let’s set the scene.

I’m Rotimi Odukoya and I’m into two things: fitness (Clmbxr is my baby), and having immaculate, good times. It’s why I decided to hit up my first rave/fitness getaway – I wanted to see whether this fitness trend that’s gaining traction actually has legs. I packed light, have just had a couple of tequila shots with the people sitting in seats 23C and 23E, so I’m ready to touch down for Dankie Sounds – Ibiza Edition.

Founded by mates Tunde Adeniyi, James ‘Jimmy’ Anyiam, Kaz Brown and Sam Olarewaju, Dankie Sounds has quickly cultivated a vibrant community of AfroBeats and Amapiano lovers. I’m talking about a group of individuals who, given the chance, would make a living as part-time dancers, glow-stick wielders, whistleblowers (not the Snowden kind), and vibe starters. Add some beautiful melanin-rich men and women throwing shapes en masse in Ibiza, and you start to get the picture.

This push towards integrating fitness into party holidays is part of a growing trend. Just a week before Dankie, Chuckie & Tazer’s RnB & Slow Jams hosted a similar getaway in Malta. They partnered with PT and fitness entrepreneur Just Geen, offering festival-goers opportunities to sweat out their alcohol consumption with fitness challenges and a classic game of tug-of-war.

“Having Beats’N’Bands [an event run by Just Geen] felt important to the culture and scene. It felt right for the community, it banged, and people loved it,” says Tazer. “We’ll definitely do it again.”
