Bahamian national Jonathan Eric Gardiner, famously known by his street alias “Player,” faces a new federal indictment in the Northern District of Georgia. The unsealed document charges the 58-year-old Long Island resident with conspiracy to import controlled substances and conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute cocaine. The charges stem from an international law enforcement operation that has successfully prosecuted more than 20 alleged members of Gardiner’s network, with 13 already pleading guilty. According to U.S. Attorney Theodore S. Hertzberg, Gardiner allegedly spearheaded a long-running, multi-year conspiracy operating out of The Bahamas that successfully funneled thousands of kilograms of cocaine into the Atlanta regional market.
The high-profile narcotics case gained substantial traction following a dramatic May 14 plane crash in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Florida. Gardiner was among 11 Bahamian nationals rescued from the water after their private aircraft, en route from Marsh Harbour, went down under undisclosed circumstances. Upon rescue, federal authorities discovered Gardiner carrying $30,000 in Bahamian currency packed in a paper bag. The bag notably bore a handwritten label pointing to a Bahamian political figure, designated in court files as “Politician-1,” sparking domestic political scrutiny. Gardiner, who previously served 18 years in U.S. prison for a prior Florida drug conviction, remains in the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service. He is currently awaiting trial in New York for separate federal drug and firearm charges.
